U2opia Launches Fonetwish Service For Facebook Access on Airtel in India

U2opia Mobile, a Singapore-based mobile solutions provider has launched Fonetwish, a platform for accessing Facebook via USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) in partnership with telecom provider Airtel. The service has been developed jointly with Facebook and it’s the first of its kind.
USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a menu-based system that allows interfacing with content based services. Unlike a normal browser, the USSD menu acts as browser to pull content to the phone, hence it does so without using the internet or activating GPRS capabilities.

Airtel’s 150 million Indian customers will be able to update their Facebook status for free, but to use other features like viewing, commenting, posting on friends walls, confirming friend requests, ‘Like’ news feeds, view notifications and finding and adding friends, they will have to pay a minimal charge of Re 1 per day.

The users will have to dial *325# (“*fbk#” for non-qwerty mobile handsets) from their handsets which will open a menu that will prompt the user to enter their Facebook username and password and after the one-time registration, a text menu is displayed for browsing through content.

“Although smartphones are available in India, the number of users are not very high. Fonetwish will allow everyone with a mobile phone to access Facebook on their mobiles,” said Sumesh Menon, Co-Founder and CEO, U2opia Mobile, speaking to Techcircle.in. “Currently the USSD based service is only available on Airtel but talks are ongoing with other telecom operators for similar services. We are also looking at expanding our services to other countries like Indonesia and Philippines.”

Nokia to introduce E7 next week at its Nokia World Event 2010

The mystery of Nokia's Symbian^3 slider may soon be solved -- Reuters is reporting that the company will introduce its new E7 smartphone at its Nokia World event in London next week, and it says that the device will pack both a "large" touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard. That's further backed up by the existence of an XML file on Nokia's own site, which seemingly confirms that the E7 does indeed run Symbian^3, and that it boasts a 640 x 360 display along with that QWERTY keyboard. Not much more than that at the moment, but those previous leaks suggest that we're basically looking at a slider version of the Nokia N8.

Play PAC-MAN Forever! using Google

Last week, Google turned its logo into a mini-version of the game PAC-MAN, as a tribute to the arcade classic’s 30th birthday. But response to the game was so high that Google created a page Google.com/Pacman to keep the game going.

From now on, whenever you need a PAC-MAN fix just point your browser to Google.com/Pacman and you can enjoy the search giant's version of this iconic video game any time you like.

Google posted the homepage doodle in celebration of PAC-MAN's 30th anniversary, and the game was only supposed to remain available for 48 hours. But enthusiastic user feedback to "Pac-Google" inspired the search giant to rethink its plans.

Numerous sites popped up offering free download of Google's PAC-MAN for those who wanted to keep their own copy once Google took the game offline. When Namco and Midway games introduced Pac-Man to North America in 1980 it quickly became a fixture in American popular culture.

PAC-MAN inspired numerous video game spin-offs, board games, lunch boxes, a Saturday morning cartoon and several versions for home video game systems.

First Human 'Mark Gasson' affected by Computer Virus

A scientist at the University of Reading has become the first person in the world to be infected by a computer virus.

Dr Mark Gasson, from the School of Systems Engineering, contaminated a computer chip which had been inserted into his hand as part of research into human enhancement and the potential risks of implantable devices.

These results could have huge implications for implantable computing technologies used medically to improve health, such as heart pacemakers and cochlear implants, and as new applications are found to enhance healthy humans.

Dr Gasson says that as the technology behind these implants develops, they become more vulnerable to computer viruses.

"Our research shows that implantable technology has developed to the point where implants are capable of communicating, storing and manipulating data," he said. "They are essentially mini computers. This means that, like mainstream computers, they can be infected by viruses and the technology will need to keep pace with this so that implants, including medical devices, can be safely used in the future."

Dr Gasson will present his results next month at the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society in Australia, which he is also chairing.

A high-end Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip was implanted into Dr Gasson's left hand last year. Less sophisticated RFID technology is used in shop security tags to prevent theft and to identify missing pets.

The chip has allowed him secure access to his University building and his mobile phone. It has also enabled him to be tracked and profiled. Once infected, the chip corrupted the main system used to communicate with it. Should other devices have been connected to the system, the virus would have been passed on.

Dr Gasson said: "By infecting my own implant with a computer virus we have demonstrated how advanced these technologies are becoming and also had a glimpse at the problems of tomorrow.

"Much like people with medical implants, after a year of having the implant, I very much feel that it is part of my body. While it is exciting to be the first person to become infected by a computer virus in this way, I found it a surprisingly violating experience because the implant is so intimately connected to me but the situation is potentially out of my control.

"I believe it is necessary to acknowledge that our next evolutionary step may well mean that we all become part machine as we look to enhance ourselves. Indeed we may find that there are significant social pressures to have implantable technologies, either because it becomes as much of a social norm as say mobile phones, or because we'll be disadvantaged if we do not. However we must be mindful of the new threats this step brings."
